Is TPS for Ukraine extended? Until when?
Why the extension happened automatically
Under the TPS statute, DHS must announce whether it extends or ends a country's designation at least 60 days before the designation expires. For Ukraine that statutory deadline was August 20, 2026, and DHS did not publish a decision in time.
When that happens, the law itself extends the designation: it continued automatically, by operation of law, for six months, through April 19, 2027. No separate announcement is required for the extension to be valid.
In practice this means your status continues while the designation is in force. You do not need to file anything new only because of the automatic extension, but your re-registration must stay current and your address must be up to date with USCIS.
What about documents and work permits (EADs)
A Federal Register notice explaining how documents and EADs are extended is still pending. Until it appears, the rules for the cards cover a shorter period than the status itself:
- As of August 14, 2026, USCIS extended expired Ukraine TPS EADs only through October 19, 2026.
- USCIS did this through individual notices sent to TPS holders, not through a general publication.
If your EAD has expired, keep the individual USCIS notice together with the card and show both to your employer. If your employer has doubts, point them to the official USCIS TPS page. Do not leave your job over a rumor before checking the latest official information.
What to do now
- Keep proof that you re-registered on time.
- Save every notice USCIS sends you, on paper and as scans.
- Watch for the Federal Register notice about documents and EADs.
- Follow updates on Ukraine Task Force and the official USCIS TPS page.
Beware of rumors
Because the extension happened without a formal announcement, social media posts about Ukraine TPS are often confusing or simply wrong. Before acting on any news, check the date of the post and compare it with the official USCIS page and the Ukraine Task Force updates. If something important seems to have changed, confirm it with a legal organization before making decisions about your job or travel.
Quick answers
Are expired Ukraine TPS work permits still valid?
As of August 14, 2026, USCIS extended expired Ukraine TPS EADs only through October 19, 2026, via individual notices sent to TPS holders. A Federal Register notice about a longer extension is still pending.
What documents should Ukraine TPS holders keep?

For your personal situation, confirm the details with a licensed immigration attorney or a DOJ-accredited representative.
